Exploring the Impact of ChatGPT on Technical Communication: A Discussion on its Potential Use Cases and Limitations

Yesterday, I participated in a call where we discussed ChatGPT. Afterwards, Maria Dastur, MBA messaged me to inquire about its potential impact on my role as a Technical Writer. I appreciated the question and considered it.

I believe the impact will vary based on the use case. For example, when I asked ChatGPT to describe ACI’s Digital Disbursements solution, it gave me a decent explanation. However, when I tried to learn to manage security in the solution, I didn’t receive a satisfactory answer. I know this because I wrote the content for this topic during my time at the organization.

I also asked ChatGPT about using an API that I documented previously. The response I received included generic information, such as registering for access, obtaining credentials, integrating the API, and testing the integration. However, it lacked details that I, as a writer, would typically provide to a user. Without these, a user might not know how to perform the task.

I’d love to hear your thoughts on how you think ChatGPT might impact those of us in the Technical Communications field.
